In line with government guidance, from September we will be welcoming all registered pupils to our schools.

EYFS 1 & 2 - Stara Class

Welcome to
Stara Class

We are an Early Years class of 23 mixed aged EYFS 1 and 2 children (Pre-school and Reception). We have a large spacious classroom and a beautiful and well equipped outside area which we have access to all year round. This is a safe and purposeful area which is solely used by Stara Class. We also have extensive grounds which we can use such as a school field, playground and wooded area which we share with the rest of the school.

Stara Class is taught by Mrs Hall and her fabulous teaching assistants. These are Natalie Srike, Janie Henderson and Elaine Humphries. We teach following the EYFS curriculum 'Development Matters' and continuously strive to provide the children with a broad, balanced and exciting curriculum.

General Information

Reading - We are passionate about reading in Early Years and it's at the heart of everything we do. We have a wonderful new reading area in class which children can access and use throughout the day. This is a quiet and calm reading space with a range of high quality books. Reading is encouraged and promoted in all our areas of learning and there are a wealth of reading material to support and extend our young readers.

Phonics - We teach 'Read Write Inc' phonics in the morning and this is a key teaching programme to ensure basic phonic skills are thoroughly taught. These are fun and engaging sessions which are very well resourced and taught by a terrific team of dedicated and skilled teachers and teaching assistants.

Homework - Look out for our new exciting homework projects for the term. These activities have been carefully planned to support and build on your child's learning in school. The idea is to complete the homework together so you have the opportunity to enrich and extend learning and understanding. The homework is not compulsory but please have some fun and have a go!! Children earn points and can achieve a bronze, silver or gold certificate which will be celebrated in assembly at the end of the term.

Forest school - This will take place on a Monday and Wednesday morning for EYFS 1 children (pre school) and on Monday afternoons for EYFS 2 children (Reception). Sessions are taught in our very own wooded area by Nicola Plummer who is Forest School trained. Please ensure waterproof clothes and wellington boots are kept in school each day as we will often be working outside linked to all areas of our learning.

PE - We have the brilliant Mr Jones teaching PE this term. PE will be on a Tuesday morning and a full kit is needed in school all week. PE will be taught to all the Reception children and the focus will change each half term. Pre-school children will have a range of fun and active sessions with the class teacher, including ride on bikes and scooters. We also have a fantastic new climbing wall which we can use in addition to the PE session.

Yoga - We offer yoga at Upton Cross and Natalie Strike will deliver a session to both EYFS 1 and 2 children (separately) on a Thursday afternoon. Yoga offers many health benefits and a great sense of well being.

If you have any questions or queries about your child please come and see us after school. Thank you for all your wonderful help and support as always.

Many thanks

Mrs Hall and her super Stara team

Spring Term 2020
This term we are starting with a pirate topic which is a firm favourite in Early Years.  We have created an exciting learning environment with a whole heap of exciting and engaging activities ready to capture the children's imaginations!
We have two 'dress up like a pirate' days planned to really excite the children and get them really involved in their learning. Look out for the photo evidence on Tapestry where we will share each step of their learning with you.
We will be cooking this term with 'Granny Jude' and making some delicious snacks to share at school and at home.
Our outdoor learning sessions will continue with Nicola (Monday and Wednesday) along with Yoga with Natalie (Thursday).
